Q&A

What is AYSO EXTRA?

An advanced tryout-based soccer program for players who want to play at a higher competitive level with structured training, weekend games, and a season calendar that resembles club soccer. The EXTRA program is for higher caliber players who are ready for faster-paced games, team based tactics and deeper development all within a supportive and familiar AYSO environment.

EXTRA Program requires more travel and commitment, so it might not be right for everyone. It consists of a Fall Season that starts in August with a minimum of two practices per week, weekend league games that will be held on Saturdays and/or Sundays, and postseason playoffs, if teams qualify. Approximately half of the games will be played at Almansor Park and the remainder throughout AYSO Section 1 (which includes Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Riverside Counties). All players are guaranteed to play at least 50% of each game in regular season play.

Selected EXTRA players are NOT eligible for the Core Fall Season with any Region, nor can they be registered on any Club Soccer Roster. Also, they will be ineligible for the 2027 All-Star Season.

Why is it necessary as a parent of an EXTRA player to volunteer

Supporting the Non-Profit Model: Since our organization is a non-profit, the fees collected for the EXTRA program are based on covering operational costs rather than generating profit. Unlike for-profit clubs, our organization relies on volunteers to help run the program efficiently, making it essential for EXTRA families to contribute time and effort in order to sustain and improve the program. Volunteering helps bridge the gap between the fees paid and the actual cost of running the program.

Maintaining Affordable Costs: EXTRA families pay a lower fee than they would at for-profit clubs. This reduced fee structure is possible due to the active involvement of volunteers. Without parent volunteers, the organization would have to hire staff or outsource services, which would significantly increase the cost of the program. Volunteering helps keep fees

Cost

Around $800 (TBD)

If the EXTRA program sounds like the right program for your player and family, then please come to the tryouts!

Tryout Information

We will be hosting 2 tryout dates at Almansor Park. If your player rates high enough, there will be a follow-up tryout at Barnes Park. It is in everyone's best interest to attend the first 2 tryouts, as it gives the players a better chance at a higher rating and making it to the 3rd and final tryout.

All players must register for the “2026 EXTRA Tryouts” Program through the parents AYSO Region 60 Account AND register their players interest using this form, AYSO Region 60 EXTRA Tryout Form

If your player wants to “play up,” it will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. There is no playing-up for the 9U division.

If your player has a conflict due to illness, injury, or an emergency, please reach out to us, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you. While we cannot guarantee adjustments, we will make every effort to assist in genuine emergencies. However, we kindly ask for your understanding that adjustments will not be made for non-emergency or unreasonable requests, as our goal is to serve the majority of families efficiently. We are committed to proceeding with fairness, transparency, and consistency for all players and families involved.

Teams will be announced by mid April. They are based on open and fair evaluations and are chosen to create a competitive balance.

How is AYSO EXTRA different from Club soccer

Both AYSO EXTRA soccer and Club soccer are competitive soccer programs targeting players that have a stronger desire and ability to play the great game of soccer. AYSO EXTRA focuses on the development of players in a competitive environment. Coaches are hand selected and preferably hold a coaching certification above and beyond their age group.  Professional trainers also work with teams/players in order to further develop and enhance their skills.

AYSO EXTRA is an AYSO program, thus, every player will play a minimum of one-half of the game. Club soccer teams do not guarantee playing time therefore limiting the individual player development at the youth levels.

  • Club soccer costs can vary between $2,000 - $3,500, depending upon the club and the number of tournaments that the team enters. Coaching fees, player fees, club fees, ref fees, and travel costs can all add up to the total individual player club costs therefore making the EXTRA program an ideal option when looking for a youth program that offers a more competitive player experience.

  • Most all club coaches are paid coaches therefore in order to increase their pay they may take on more teams during a single season which could impact the dedication available to your child’s team. Many EXTRA coaches carry the same level or higher of coaching certification than some club coaches and their coaching is on a volunteer basis.

Please feel free to contact our EXTRA Coordinators if you have any questions, concerns or if you want to know more about the program.
